Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy facilitates the accessing and processing of traumatic memories and other adverse life experiences to bring these to an adaptive resolution. After successful treatment with EMDR therapy, emotional distress is relieved, negative beliefs about yourself and others are reformulated, and physiological arousal is reduced.
Trauma includes physical, mental, and emotional responses to an adverse, life-altering external event or series of events that surpass a person’s coping ability. Shock and denial are typical reactions immediately after a traumatic event. Unpredictable thoughts and emotions, strained relationships, flashbacks, and physical symptoms may persist long after the traumatic event. I work with individuals who have or are experiencing trauma, including outdoor trauma and avalanche survivors, using self-compassion techniques that teach tools for reconnecting with themselves and others.
Grief is a natural response to loss (often the death of a loved one). It is an internal experience of deep sorrow which affects emotions, identity, relationships, well-being, and connectedness.
A significant loss brings intense grief.
Active, artistic self-expression in a therapy setting engages the mind, body, and spirit. Art modalities provide individuals with a way to express the myriad of emotions that accompany grief and trauma. Creative outlets also empower individuals with a sense of control as they tell their stories.
Play is primarily how children communicate. Play is also how children begin to understand concepts of loss, including death, separation, and control. Play also helps children share their stories. Play includes, physical, sensory, art, dress-up, etc.
