1. Improve Coping Skills
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to develop healthy coping skills. This might include things like exercise, journaling, or deep breathing exercises. When you have healthy coping skills, you’ll be better equipped to deal with stressful situations without letting them get the best of you. I will help you determine which coping skills are right for you and your circumstances during treatment.
2. Address Triggers
Triggers are anything—a sound, a smell, a sight—that brings back memories of the traumas you’ve experienced. I will help you identify your triggers and practice dealing with them adaptively so you feel prepared when they do come up.
3. Learn to Navigate Emotions and Reactions
If you’re struggling with PTSD, likely, your emotions are all over the place. You might feel sadness one minute, anxious the next, and anger the next. While emotions are natural responses to internal and external cues, there are things you can do to manage them more effectively. EMDR, talk therapy, and relaxation techniques can all be helpful in this regard.
4. Restore Proper Sleep Patterns
One of the most common symptoms of PTSD is insomnia, which can significantly impact your quality of life. If you’re not getting enough sleep, everything from your mental to physical health suffers. You can do several things to improve your sleep patterns; together, we will discover what works best for you.
5. Improve Relationships with Others
If you’re dealing with PTSD, your relationships have also likely suffered. One of the goals of treatment is to help you mend those relationships and build new ones that are healthy and supportive. This could involve individual therapy, couples therapy, or family therapy—or some combination thereof.
All EMDR-focused therapy includes an EMDR Workbook.
